Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy, also known as ‘injection therapy’ is typically used to close smaller diameter veins, usually spider veins, on legs and hands. A chemical is injected into the vein which irritates the lining, causing the vein to collapse. The vein is absorbed by the body and the blood is rerouted to competent vessels nearby. Multiple injections are needed per session, with the injections often being described as feeling like a pin prick or insect bite. The number of sessions is determined by the severity of the case with the average needing about 3 sessions. Other forms of sclerotherapy include foam sclerotherapy, where a foam is injected, and glycerin sclerotherapy where glycerin is injected into the vein.

CTEV Laser Ablation

CTEV Laser Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure performed in the office to treat large varicose veins. It closes the main vein from the inside using laser energy from the CoolTouch© laser. It is a safe and effective FDA-approved procedure for treatment of venous insufficiency. Kentucky Vein Care has achieved a 99% success rate since its opening in 2001. Under ultrasound guidance, the CoolTouch© laser fiber is inserted directly into the vein through a catheter. Because the catheter is so small, only a small incision is used (1/4″), reducing the incidence of scarring. Pulses of energy are released along the vein to ‘weld’ it shut. Only local anesthesia is used, and patients are able to walk out of the office and return to their daily routine almost immediately.

Compression hose

Compression hose are a form of conservative management that uses gradual compression to move blood up the leg. It helps promote circulation, slowing the development of new veins and helping to minimize symptoms. It will not cure existing problems but can alleviate symptoms like burning, itching, aching and cramping.

Oftentimes, insurance companies require patients to wear compression hose for a period of time before any procedure will be covered.

Phlebectomy

The tissues surrounding the varicose veins is anesthetized, small incisions are made (1 mm in diameter) and the vein is removed through the incisions. Incisions are not closed to allow drainage, but will heal within 2-3 days. All bruising and swelling should resolve within 2-3 weeks.
